Arthur Gower Trophy 2026

Arthur Gower Trophy Champions: The Sharks Defend the Title at Falcon College

There is a specific kind of pressure that comes with being the defending champions. When we arrived at Falcon College this past weekend for the Arthur Gower and Mermaids Water Polo Tournament, the goal was clear. We weren't just there to compete; we were there to bring the trophy back to Bulawayo.

I am incredibly proud to announce that the CBC Sharks have successfully defended their title, being crowned the Arthur Gower Trophy Champions for the second year running.

A Clean Sweep: The Road to the Trophy

Winning a tournament of this caliber requires more than just talent. It requires a relentless mental focus and the physical conditioning to maintain high standards across multiple high-intensity fixtures. The Sharks delivered exactly that, finishing the weekend with a perfect record of five wins from five matches.

Our campaign was defined by clinical finishing and a defensive structure that proved difficult for even the strongest opposition to break down. The results speak for themselves:

  • CBC 16, St George’s College 4: A dominant opening that set the tone for the weekend.
  • CBC 14, St John’s College 11: A high-scoring, tactical battle where our composure in the final period made the difference.
  • CBC 10, Falcon College 5: Playing the hosts is always a challenge, but the boys stayed disciplined in a hostile environment.
  • CBC 7, Hellenic Academy 4: A gritty, defensive masterclass against a very well-drilled side.
  • CBC 8, Peterhouse 7: A nail-biting finish that tested our resilience and brotherhood to the limit.

Celebrating the Wider Water Polo Community

While we are thrilled with the Sharks' performance, this weekend was a fantastic showcase for Zimbabwe water polo as a whole.

I would like to extend a massive congratulations to all the girls' teams who competed with such intensity and spirit in the Mermaids section. A special mention must go to the Hellenic Academy girls, who were deservedly crowned the Mermaids Champions. Their skill and teamwork throughout the tournament were exceptional to watch.

Furthermore, a huge thank you to Falcon College for hosting both the Arthur Gower and Mermaids competitions. Managing two major tournaments simultaneously is a massive undertaking, and the hospitality, organization, and facilities provided made for a world-class experience for all the athletes and supporters involved.

Discipline, Resilience, and Unity

As a coach, what pleased me most wasn't just the scorelines, but the way we played. We talk a lot in our programme about how structure builds confidence.

Throughout the weekend, even when matches were tight, particularly in that one-goal thriller against Peterhouse, the boys didn't panic. They trusted the systems we’ve worked on in training and held each other accountable.

This achievement is a testament to the commitment of this squad. They have put in the hours of small improvements repeated daily, and seeing that effort translate into a gold medal is immensely rewarding.

Gratitude and Looking Ahead

Success in water polo is never a solo effort. I want to extend my sincere thanks to the coaching team for their tireless dedication, and to the parents and supporters who traveled to Falcon to cheer the boys on. Your energy on the sidelines is a massive boost for the team.

To the Sharks: enjoy this victory. You’ve earned the right to be called champions again. But remember, the standard is now set. We celebrate today, and we get back to work tomorrow to ensure we keep pushing the boundaries of CBC water polo.
