What Keyword Research Actually Is
Keyword research is the process of discovering what your potential customers type into Google when they are looking for products or services like yours. It answers the most fundamental SEO question: "What should I optimise my pages for?"
Without keyword research, you are guessing. You might build a page targeting "plumbing services" when your customers actually search for "plumber near me" or "burst pipe repair Borrowdale". The difference between the term you think people search and the term they actually search is often the difference between ranking and being invisible.
The Zimbabwean Search Landscape
Keyword research in Zimbabwe has unique characteristics. Search volumes are smaller than in larger markets like South Africa or the UK, which means the standard keyword tools sometimes show "0 volume" for terms that actually receive meaningful traffic. Do not let low volume numbers discourage you; in a market with little competition, even 50 searches a month for a high-intent term can generate significant business.
Zimbabwean searchers tend to use specific local terminology and suburb-level geographic modifiers. They search for "dentist Borrowdale" not just "dentist Harare". They search for "borehole drilling Harare" not "water well installation". Understanding the language your customers use, rather than industry jargon, is critical.
Free Methods That Work
Google Autocomplete: Start typing a search related to your business and see what Google suggests. These suggestions are based on real searches by real people. "Plumber Har..." might reveal "plumber Harare prices", "plumber Harare emergency", "plumber Harare reviews". Each suggestion is a potential page on your website.
Google "People Also Ask": Search for your main keyword and look at the questions Google shows in the "People Also Ask" box. These are real questions your customers are asking, and each one could become a FAQ section or a blog article.
Google Search Console: If you already have a website, Search Console shows you the exact queries that bring people to your site. This is the most accurate data you can get because it comes directly from Google. Look for queries where you rank on page two or three; these are your easiest wins.
Commercial vs Informational Keywords
Not all keywords are equal. Commercial keywords signal buying intent: "plumber Harare", "web design company Zimbabwe", "dental implants cost Bulawayo". These should be targeted on your service pages. Informational keywords signal learning intent: "how to unblock a drain", "what is SEO", "best schools in Harare". These should be targeted with blog content that attracts potential customers to your site early in their journey.
Prioritise commercial keywords for your core pages. They drive direct business. Use informational keywords for your content strategy to build authority and capture traffic at the top of the funnel.
