What Technical SEO Actually Means
Technical SEO is the work that ensures Google can find, crawl, understand and index your website properly. It does not involve writing content or building links; it is about the infrastructure your content sits on. Think of it as the foundation of a building: invisible when done right, but if it is cracked, nothing built on top of it will stand properly.
The Non-Negotiable Foundations
Page speed: Your site must load in under three seconds. In Zimbabwe, where internet connections can be slower than in more developed markets, this is especially important. Compress images, minimise code, use modern image formats like WebP, and choose a fast hosting provider. Test your speed at pagespeed.web.dev.
Mobile-first design: Google indexes the mobile version of your site first. If your website looks broken or is hard to use on a phone, your rankings suffer even if the desktop version is perfect. More than 60% of searches in Zimbabwe happen on mobile devices. Test at search.google.com/test/mobile-friendly.
HTTPS: Your site must use HTTPS (the padlock in the browser address bar). Google has confirmed HTTPS as a ranking signal, and browsers now show warnings on non-HTTPS sites. If your site still runs on HTTP, fixing this is priority one.
Clean URL structure: URLs should be readable: /web-design-harare is better than /page?id=347. Use hyphens between words, keep URLs short, and include your target keyword where it fits naturally.
Crawlability and Indexing
XML sitemap: Create an XML sitemap that lists all your important pages and submit it to Google Search Console. This tells Google exactly which pages exist on your site and helps it discover new content faster.
Robots.txt: This file tells search engines which parts of your site to crawl and which to skip. Make sure it is not accidentally blocking important pages. A misconfigured robots.txt can make your entire site invisible to Google.
Broken links: Regularly check for and fix broken links (404 errors). Broken links frustrate users and waste Google's crawl budget. Use a free tool like Screaming Frog or the site audit feature in Google Search Console.
On-Page Technical Elements
Title tags: Every page needs a unique, descriptive title tag under 60 characters that includes your target keyword. This is what appears as the blue link in Google search results.
Meta descriptions: Write a unique, compelling description for every page, under 155 characters. While not a direct ranking factor, a well-written meta description improves click-through rates from search results.
Heading structure: Use one H1 per page (your main title), then H2s for major sections and H3s for sub-sections. This hierarchy helps Google understand your content structure.
Schema markup: Add structured data (JSON-LD format) to help search engines understand your content type. LocalBusiness schema for your homepage, Service schema for service pages, FAQ schema for FAQ sections, and Article schema for blog posts. This can also earn rich results (star ratings, FAQ dropdowns) in search.
The Zimbabwe-Specific Factor: Connection Speed
Page speed is a global ranking factor, but it is especially impactful in Zimbabwe. Your website needs to load fast on a 3G connection, not just on fibre. This means aggressive image compression, lazy loading of images below the fold, minimal use of heavy JavaScript frameworks, and a content delivery network (CDN) if possible. A site that loads in two seconds on 3G gives you a genuine competitive edge.
